Well, of course, as with anything regarding 'kids' between the ages of 12 and 18, it is very different given the emotional, mental and physical development of the child. At 16, there is still a proportion of 'kids' who have not the maturity to be trusted with a car to eliminate the option that they should.

Think of this, too. If a 'kid' of 16 drives, they are still at school. How can they pay for petrol? How can they pay insurance? So, for me, no. Each case, ideally would be taken on merit, but seeing as that is impossible, one would have to decide on the safest course of action for everyone involved, which is not the unsuitable to drive, and thus for nobody that age to do so.

In France you can drive at 16, so long as you're accompanied by an adult. You can't take your test til your 18 though, and have to have driven something like 1800 km before taking the test. There are a lot of 16 year old who are sensible enough to drive, but also a lot of dicks who have the mental age of a newly born sparrow. Accompanied by an adult, i don't think it makes too much of a difference. But unaccompanied at 16 should be a definate NO. We should do all possible to reduce the number of road accidents, not encourage more. Voila!

I'll buy that, but the adult has to be over 30, right?

In the UK you can't drive until you are seventeen. I think this is too young, i think back to when i was 17 and i drove like a fool. Regulary speeding etc just because i could and i am what you would have called an otherwise responsible person. I look back at some of the crazy things i did when i was younger with disgust, but then you only realise when you've done them. SOme people will still say i drive a little manically, but i say boo to them. I don't drive manically, just perhaps in a differnet way to they would expect :P.

Right on! You flaming lunatic. I remember when you almost ended our lives on a patch of black ice. I can still hear the screams.

And I remember his only collision. At like 0.05mph. Reversing. Very funny. Good driver though. Not past the White Gate, though. Treating it like a danged chicane with the quicking and the swerving and the screaming and the fear. I remember it all too well.

And as a 2nd point, if you travel through time, a 16-year-old me should not drive. Or leave the house. Well, 1 out of 2 ain't bad. Ish.

I wasn't aware you left the house? Where did you go?

K, this is sooo obvious for all those itiots who think u should be shrivled and gray before having the privelage of driving: If all the kids currently driving to school suddenly had to ride the bus, imagine the cramped school parking lot worth of cars, full of teenagers all in the buses and how much money (that the government doesn't have) it would cost to get the needed # of extra buses and fill them each w/ gasoline, etc... another reason i think this is stupid is b/c whether you are 25 or 16 when you begin driving, you still have the same level of inexperience.... Come on!

But think, if the buii were used then maybe the government could use buii from less popular routes on the 'big, school runs' and once they'd reaped enough of a profit...and then think of the harm there wouldn't be done to the environment.

And, yes, 16 y/olds and 25 y/olds have the same driving inexperience, but one of the two has far superior life experience. As we discussed above, its not to say that all 16 year olds are not mature enough to drive, but if they are all given the option and even 1 person has an accident because of it, then the decision would be made incorrectly. Sorry, but its true.

But other people have accidents...so they do. If there was a way of preventing them, the world would be a better place.

Nah im not one of those idiots who think you should be old and grey before you can drive.

All im saying is i think to what i did when i was 17 and don't like what i did. You can't say that doing twice the speed limit in built areas is a good idea, but to a 17 year old kid it seems perfectly normal, i should know, i did it. Im only 22 now, but i don't do things like that now, i've grown up.

If i were 25 now and started learning, sure i'd be just as inexperienced as a 17 year old at driving but i sure as hell wouldn't be doing twice the speed limit!!!

Oh i suppose i should add that i did speed just because i could, had a semi-powerful car, especially straight after passing my test, so as any body would, wanted to see just what the car could do. I guess i found out, shame i didn't do it on a track instead of on the open roads.

I could have killed myself, my friends and anyone who had the misfortune to on the road at the same time as well. Ah well, we live and learn.

Many parts of the US have no public transport whatsoever. I would have gone out of my mind if I had not been able to drive when I was 16.

absolutely not!!! if i had to wait till i was 17 then everyone else should too! I actually think 17 is too young, especially for males. people just aren't mature enough at 16 or 17 and are out to impress too much. you don't NEED to drive at that age, you're normally still at school!
