Here in New York, the old Times Square was scary but authentic, and the new Times Square is scary because it is so inauthentic. But in between, around 1993-94, they let artists take over for a while and it was really cool. All the porno theaters on 42nd Street were shut down, and they were redecorated with bottle caps and artificial flowers and holograms of space robots and just all kinds of weird, colorful paint jobs. The best part was the slogans and poetry on the marquees. Everyone loved the one that faced the square, reading Many professionals are crackpots.
