Wow, I never suspected that you would admit to Buckaroo Banzai.
But Meet John Doe? It's like a script-o-rator version of a platonic Capra film. Call me a cynic, but for paint-by-numbers Capra, I much prefer The Hudsucker Proxy.

I have to comply there. Lola rennt is easily the greatest of many, many foreign movies I've seen (all the better for being able to understand German, I thought!)

Since all these films were released within the last year or so, I guess that indicates that we have acheived the pinnacle of cinematic civilization.

How about The Wizard Of Oz? To say it was what 1937? It's remarkably fresh still.....
Re: Re: Re: Re: The Greatest Films Recently Made. by Amelia on 2000-08-30 03:12:23  |  Reply to this
1939, actually, but yes, I believe that film is one of the most enduring parts of our collective culture. The mere fact that it is now the root of so many cliches is testament to its total permeation of our consciousness.
It is also one of the few cases where I think the film is a lot better than the book.

The heading on this string (too thin to be a thread) was "The Greatest Films Recently Made" hence the response of recent movies, some of the greatest film(s) EVER made are:

The Whiz - OK just kidding (The Wizard of Oz as noted by several is probably #1)

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

The Bridge Over River Kwai

I've never really enjoyed it. Still, that's not to say it's a poor film, by any means....

  Kids, kids, kids, kids.

EVER. Ever Made. As in, when was the first movie made? Near to the beginning of the 20th Century or the end of the 19th?

I'm just sayin'.

A Clockwork Orange, by far the greatest movie I've seen to date. "What does God want? Does God want goodness or the choice of goodness? Is a man who chooses the bad perhaps in some way better than a man who has the good imposed upon him?" Hm, or The Matrix or I'd Do Anything.
