Eye for an eye? by Kid. on 2001-06-12 08:50:05

Yes, in an amusing turnaround in things for me to quote, we have the bible. Its a result of my new (albeit brief) political kick. So, then. Americans rage at the execution of Timothy McVeigh. Americans condemn Timothy McVeigh. English journalist is (literally) bullied off a talkshow this morning for putting his opinion across. Its a sensitive issue, folks, is the old capital punishment chestnut, but where do YOU stand? I won't put my side across until at least 2 other people have, so you'll maybe have a long wait if the topic doesn't take off. I'd like to cite some things to stir in the cauldrons of your minds whilst we're here. 1, The Guildford 4. 2, Life imprisonment costs. 3, State of mind. Again, I feel like the black sheep for starting another topic, but it's something I can live with.

Speaking as an American, I have to say that I gave the man no thought or energy whatsoever... Of course on Monday EVERY goddamn news channel was covering "the top news story" from morning 'til night. Aargh. I simply turned off the channels -- it's quite simple. It seems, however, that the press reaching your end of the world portrays us Yanks as bible-thumping zealots. No. No. No. The OTHER half of the country wanted to pull the switch personally! In a way it can be construed as a sort-of societal euthanasia -- with the weird twist being that we are putting HIM out of OUR misery. For answers to your other questions go to: Sheriff Joe Arpaio's website. He is the posse-driven sheriff out in Arizona (I lived there for five years). He is considered radical and inhumane in his treatment of innmates... and NOW he's put his jail on LIVE! webcam. So, check it out. The End.

Erm, you're probably right about the 'bible thumping zealots' impression. I was only judging on the marches I've seen (G.W. Bush got into gyp in a foreign land too, by the look of today's footage). Web-cam of a jail, eh? So you can have all the effect of having commmitted a crime from the comfort of your own living room. Nice....

You had mentioned inmate costs, and Sheriff Joe Arpaio makes ALL inmates PAY for their lousy meals! I happen to think that's great! I mean, jail isn't supposed to be fun, or educational, or a boarding house w/revolving doors. Sheriff Joe also started a FEmale chain-gang and makes the male inmates wear this huge pink underwear! He was accused of abuses etc. which is WHY he started the webcam -- to show the public he's not dealing double... (did you see the website yet?)

No, I've not seen it yet, but you can happily note that I've been successfully tempted. I happen to agree with the gaol as a penal institution rather than a hotel for criminals, so fair play! (ish)
