Spotlight On Louis Armstrong.... by Kid Loco on 2000-09-01 01:17:11

Trumpeter extraordinaire, gravelly vocalled, with that grin. Jazz-Master? I dunno. I really like his Sunny Side Of The Street.

One of the weirdest CDs in my collection includes Satchmo at the Monterey Jazz festival performing John Lennon's Give Peace a Chance. It's a good reminder of how long a career he really had.

Does he sing? Or just trumpet? It would be cool either way. I've found his brass-blowing is almost as expressive as words either way, so....

Man, just realized I never answered this. He sings and there are some woo-woo backup girls too. Lots of tambourine and a little bit of his trumpet.

While you are talking trumpeters one must also think Miles Davis. His career spanned nearly 50 years. Just think, Miles Davis & Dizzy Gillespie on stage together . . . Wow! All that being said, I'm more of a Blues man.

Dammit APM, you pre-empted the next section, 'All Eyes On Miles Davis Y'All'. (Incidentally I am working my way through Arthur Conley's 'Sweet Soul Music') but Yeah, Bitches Brew, Eh? Nice disc. I have to confess to preferring Dizzy, but only because I've heard less Miles....

I think that Bitches Brew was the album where he made his transition from Jazz to . . . now what would you call it, funk? Miles was a master at Jazz during the 40s and 50s, then in the late 60s his music went through some serious changes (drugs maybe?). I have to agree though, Dizzy was fantastic!
