No Ovaltine please! by meetoo on 2000-09-06 15:45:26

So I've been watching these commercials for Ovaltine and reminiscing about MY childhood taste for the stuff -- (yes, Ovaltine's been around for a while and so have I)... and what I remember liking about it was the malt-y taste it had. Chocolate-y, malt-y and something else... there was a sort of aftertaste -- not bad, just subtle enough to be distinctly "Ovaltine". So last week I decide I'm going to give it a retry. I look at the ingredients and guess what? -- beef stock! right there listed on the label! Mmmmm! Chocolate and beef flavor right there together for one big taste fiesta. gak. At least now I know what that aftertaste was...

You should stay away from the MALT - that's pretty nasty.

Rich Chocolaty Ovaltine doesn't have anything worse than some diglycerides (yummy).

Ingredients: Sugar, cocoa processed with alkali, whey, salt, carrageenan, mono and diglycerides, artificial flavor, colored with yellow no. 6, red no. 40, and blue no. 1.

My god! I have way too much time on my hands!

Damn. Malt is my favorite flavor of Ovaltine. Maybe I'll just shut my eyes and swallow from now on. Wait, do you mean beef stock like broth, or beef stock like the remains of boiled hooves?

You just reminded me that in San Francisco Tommie's Joint advertises "corned beef cocktails" in neon. Okay, in two separate but tantalizingly close lines of neon. But now I want a spam daquiri.

Do you remember an old ovaltine commercail from the 50's with a swiss mountain man hurling a huge boulder off the side of a mountain after drinking ovaltine to give him the strength ? If you do please respond

Heck, Tommy's Joint specializes in buffalo if I remember correctly. If you can't get a meat cocktail there, where could you go? I do remember, vaguely, a drink called a "bullshot" that involved hot beef bouillon and some kind of liquor. But I, too, love me some Ovaltine. Where did you buy this version with the beef stock? The jar in my kitchen seems pretty tame by comparison. I always thought it had some kind of roasted grain to give it that dark taste. I like it the same way I sometimes crave Postum. Postum is a great hot drink if you don't try to think of it is fake coffee. It's made from roasted barley, I think, which brings up some of that malt sugar like the the Ovaltine taste. Let's just take a moment to admire those "health foods" of 100 years ago, not the least of which: Coca-Cola!

Yes, I guess that *is* the ideal place for a meat cocktail. "Bartender, I'd like a Burgundy Buffalo." Prevents heart attacks too! If they roast the meat and drain the fat (no small task at Tommy's) all they'd have to do is puree it. Presto -- a high-protein drink that keeps you energized all day. Best when used as a juice boost with healthful, life-giving vodka. Remember the movie Sleeper, where they've discovered that for good health people need to eat steak. ...Trying to think what liquor goes with Ovaltine now.

Apparently I missed this earlier, Molly. I'd say any of the liquors you would tipple into cocoa. For instance, Kahlua for a Keoke Ovaltine, Jameson's for an Irish Ovaltine, etc.

hey Amelia... I actually never purchased the Ovaltine once I read the ingredients! But, I will tell you that I saw it in a Von's market and it was one of the larger, glass jars of the stuff... f.y.i.

OK, I finally remembered to look when I was at the market. The malt and chocolate malt flavors of ovaltine both contain BEET EXTRACT but no animal products that I could discern. It is not, indeed, included in the plain chocolate flavor. I am assuming that it is something to do with sugar beets, or may even be a coloring agent. But no cows in there except for the milk you mix it in.

Can you still get a Little Orphan Annie decoder ring?
Re: Re: No Ovaltine please! by Amelia on 2003-04-05 10:39:33  |  Reply to this
I thought Marshall McLuhan decoded Little Orphan Annie back in the 1960s. But I suppose there is a whole new generation now that would like to have a go at it from the Derrida camp.

Does anyone get digestive problems from drinking Rich Chocolately Ovaltine? My husband swears it's giving him gas and bloating after I started making him drink the Ovaltine (because it has vitamins and minerals!) instead of chocolate milk made with Hershey's syrup. I think he's making it up. Anyone?

i read the jar of my ovaltine jar that is from the earily 1980's and i think you misread "beef extract"... on my jar is stays "beet extract", except the "t" is in a different font... so i might be "bee extract" or "beet extract"... either way i don't think there is any beef in it... does anyone know where i can get some ovaltine products?

What the fuck. I recall so many tastes in life and yet Ovaltine does not make the top 20. I would so much like to say, "I remember Ovaltine influencing my life". I have to buy this Ovaltine product again and infuse it with dopamine enhancing chemicals. That way the stimulus is received in such a way that I can at least measure the impact of sucrose along with other addictive ingredients saying "This chocolate drink is making me feel stimulated in so many ways not just because the addition of artificially produced dopamine/seratonin factors has been introduced but that I am smiling, laughing and orgasming uncontrollably due to the overall flavor of this product". Yes, That would add to my love of Ovaltine, I guarantee it!!!!

I grew up during the 1930's. I remember the taste combination of Ritz crackers, peanut butter, and hot Ovaltine. The Ovaltine in those days consisted of large, ragged-looking, rich dark brown, crystals. The taste was delicious. I bought a jar recently and found that it was a light tan powder, and when I mixed it with hot milk it tasted like crap. Whoever made the decision to "improve" it should be fired.

Yes, I also can remember those large, ragged-looking, rich dark brown, crystals. When I was a little kid in the early 60's, I spent an occassional night at my grandma's house. She would always give me a glass of hot Ovaltine before bedtime, I always looked forward to it. I agree with you that the stuff they make now just isn't the same. I would settle for an old empty brown glass jar, but I can't even find one on eBay, must be quite rare!

Who remembers Ovaltine coming in a clear glass clown container? The top of the clown hat has a red cap to pour the Ovaltine out. The container was made in the early 1960's. My brother has it in his possession, but it's NOT for sale. I wish Ovaltine would bring the clown container back for its centennial celebration. My sister and I would like to have one, too. I still purchase Ovaltine at my local Wal-Mart store. Kare K
